The World According To Woj

Friday, August 29, 2003

Hi all!

I've been busy the last 2 weeks. I've been working on a short-term contract, 3 1/2 weeks to be exact, to build a browser-based client-server application for use in a standalone environment. Data will be replicated daily back to a central database. The tool is a data collection application and I've been working on the interface. It's been keeping me very busy as I put in 8-15 hours per day but the rate is good.

My son started school this week so, that gives me more focused time to work on the project. After the project is over, I'll owe hima bit of quality time though.

Not much else going on in my life right now. I'm trying to still get LT work but that's a slow, hard task.

Wow! What a strange set of circumstances? I'm working on that small contract I last mentioned but they are really dragging their feet with getting me enough work to do. They seem to be all in a tizzy about deadlines and such but they just don't really want to give me enough tasks to keep me working more than an hour or two per day.

In the meantime, I started work as a contractor with a great little company called Pathfinder Associates that really wants me to work. They are supportive and really good people and I have enough work to keep me very busy. I'll be working only 3 1/2 weeks on this first project and if all goes well, I might get other work or even a FT job out of it.

The work they are having me do is help them construct a website. Their criteria for a developer was someone that really understood HTML code and could work at the code level. That pretty much sums up my skillset since I've been a hand-coder since I started web page design and development. The only strange thing right now is that they asked me to bill a fixed "day" rate. I'm still getting my psyche used to that idea. It takes a different mentality than working hourly.

There's another small glitch in the project which will be really challenging and interesting at the same time. The site is being developed in another language.

Unemployment benefits ended yesterday for me. But, alas, I have a last minute contract which may end up giving me a job. I'm working on a project as a contractor and then, if the company does well, I may become employed. They are a startup and I am helping them finish their application.

So, off to work I go and stay tuned to see what happens.
